When First Grade Came to the Farm — and We Brought the Coop to Them

Not every school day includes a coop under construction and a curious flock underfoot. But that's exactly how one first grade class from The Colorado Springs School spent a morning this spring — out at the LuckyBird shop in Franktown, Colorado.
The visit kicked off a partnership between LuckyBird Coops and the school: the class was getting a chicken coop of its own, and came out first to see where — and how — it comes together. They met Bill, Doreen, and Austin, the small team behind every LuckyBird build, spent time with the animals and the flock, and watched their own Barn House Coop take shape in the shop — framing, roofing, and all the details that don't usually make it into a classroom lesson.

A few weeks later, LuckyBird returned the favor. On a Friday morning in May, the finished Barn House Coop made the trip from Franktown to the school's Colorado Springs campus, delivered and installed on-site for the class to finally call their own.

It's the kind of full-circle project LuckyBird hopes to have more of — a coop that starts with a field trip and ends with a flock of new first-grade chicken keepers.
